Benefits Of Wheatgrass

Effectiveness Of Wheatgrass Extract

What is Wheatgrass Extract?

Dr Wheatgrass' wheatgrass extract is derived from freshly cut, young, vital wheatgrass sprouts. Using a proprietary process that enables almost 100% retention of bioactives results in a stable extract that lasts for many years. The process takes about three months to complete under strictly controlled conditions. As a result, Dr Wheatgrass' wheatgrass extract contains higher antioxidant levels than fresh wheatgrass juice.

How is Wheatgrass Extract different?

The wheatgrass sprout extract could contain much higher levels of antioxidants compared with freshly juiced wheatgrass. Juicing does not extract all bioactive material from the wheatgrass leaves. A significant amount remains in the fiber which does not get absorbed into the body. By comparison, our proprietary extraction process, which takes several months, yields almost 100% return of bioactives.

Wheatgrass extract is a slightly brown, clear liquid, unlike green fresh wheatgrass juice. It is brown because there is no chlorophyll remaining in the extract. (Instead of "chlorophyll", think "Grass Juice Factor.") Wheatgrass extract does not have the odor and taste of fresh wheatgrass but still retain full biological activity in it. Many people find it difficult to tolerate the odor and taste of fresh wheatgrass juice. Wheatgrass extract is well received by all ages including young children.

Wheatgrass extract is shelf-stable for at least two years at room temperature. Fresh wheatgrass juice only lasts a few days if refrigerated.

Wheatgrass Extract vs Wheatgrass Juice vs Wheatgrass Powder

In 2006 a group of Indian scientists (Kulkarni et. al.) performed an important study prompted by the knowledge that the search is on for plant products with high antioxidant activities

Antioxidant levels (phenolic and flavonoid compounds) of water-based (i.e. wheatgrass juice) and alcohol-based extractions of wheatgrass were measured from plants grown under different growing conditions over periods from 6 to 15 days. These conditions included tap water, tap water with nutrients, soil and tap water and soil with nutrients. These extracts were compared with a commercially available wheatgrass tablet.

Wheatgrass Strength Comparison

The scientists found antioxidant levels of wheatgrass extract were:

1. Highest at the end of the growing period (15 days).

2. Up to 30% higher in alcohol-extracted solutions compared with freshly juiced wheatgrass.

3. Highest in soil with nutrients.

4. Higher than many natural extracts and vegetables.

5. Antioxidant level is significantly lower in the wheatgrass tablet compared with both fresh juice and alcohol-extracted solutions.

Grass Juice Factor in Wheatgrass Extract

Researchers have described many of the biologically active substances in wheatgrass, but have yet to ascertain the exact nature of the elusive 'Grass Juice Factor'. The Grass Juice Factor demonstrates remarkable growth and fertility effects in experimental animals.

Since 1995, Dr. Chris Reynolds, an Australian family physician and a founder of Dr Wheatgrass, has observed numerous healing phenomena when using wheatgrass sprout extract for a broad spectrum of medical conditions. These include wound-healing, burns, fractures, soft tissue injuries, anal fissure, molluscum contagiosum and more. Clearly "something was happening" that begged explanation.

These findings prompted Dr. Reynolds to propose a possible physiological mechanism that might explain at least some of his observations. Researchers had already described numerous biological actives in cereal grasses, but none of them seemed to explain the broad spectrum of conditions that responded to wheatgrass. Nor did they explain the sometimes astonishing rate that healing occurred.

But there is no chlorophyll in the extract! So what was actually causing these phenomena? Dr. Reynolds' guess? The Grass Juice Factor. Scientists have been trying to identify what it is since the 1930's. One possible explanation could be that the Grass Juice Factor influences Growth Factor activity. There are many types of growth factor in the body that are responsible for cell growth, recovery, repair and many other functions. One of their major functions is control of the immune response and the immune status of the individual. They are also responsible for tissue repair and the production of blood elements by bone marrow and other blood producing cells.
